Job Opportunities

Employment in the Chemistry Department provides student's with the opportunity to expand their basic knowledge and understanding of chemistry and chemistry education, as well as to interact with faculty and staff in a relaxed, non-classroom based setting.

The Chemistry Department regularly employs students as stockroom aids or laboratory assistants.  The pay scale is dictated by the university and is generally at minimum wage or slightly above, depending on your educational experience.  General stockroom duties include the distribution and cleaning of glassware, regular maintainence of the MSDS inventory, and other jobs dictated by the stockroom manager.  Lab assistants generally have completed the lab course in which they assist.  Lab assistants provide assistance with distribution of equipment, aid students with sample preparation and in instrumental analyses such as IR, and answer student questions as they are able.  Advanced students are also enlisted to aid with homework grading and to run evening tutorial sessions.

The Department also employs junior and/or senior chemistry majors in occasional jobs requiring more advanced chemistry knowledge and skills.  For example, we have had students manage large scale solvent distillation (i.e. recycling of acetone), collect NMR spectra for Organic I and II lab courses, and prepare or test lecture demonstrations.

To apply for a job or to find out more information about available jobs in the chemistry department speak to Loyola Caron (lmc@nebrwesleyan.edu) or Meylonie Schatz (mgs@nebrwesleyan.edu).
